What is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease?
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, or GERD, is a terribly uncomfortable condition in which gastric juices from the stomach travel back up into the esophagus. It affects people of all ages, from infants to elderly. Those with asthma are at higher risk; additionally, GERD may exacerbate asthma symptoms.
Everyone experiences reflux to some degree through the simple act of burping. However, when it becomes painful and interferes with everyday life, then it is time to seek help. The sensation of throat clearing or postnasal drip could actually be GERD, so be sure to check with your allergy physician.
